Andrés Hincapié

Andrés grew up dancing socially in his native Colombia, which he left in 2008. He was a member of the folkloric dance company Grupo Atlántico in St. Louis MO (2012-2017) focusing on Colombian folkloric dances including cumbia, tambora, and bullerengue. He has extensive training in salsa. He trained on-1 style with Lauren Wilmore in St. Louis MO (2012-2017), on-2 style with CBDC in Raleigh NC (2018-2023), and has been training himself since then. Under Lauren Wilmore, Andrés also learned samba, bachata, and kizomba. In 2023, Andrés became a formal student of Afro-Cuban folkloric dances under maestra Marisol Blanco. Given his own Afro-latin identity, Andrés' approach to dance relies strongly on connection to its roots. He has strengthened this connection through his work with the Mix(ed)tape Podcast, which explores the black roots of rhythms, dances and songs in Latin America, the Caribbean and their diasporas. Andrés is also a professor of economics at UNC-CH.
